About

Hi! I’m Jolie O’Dell, the Single Housewife.

I love cooking and homemaking, but I am still a single girl living in San Francisco. So I figured, why wait to be a homemaker for someone else? I might as well enjoy the fruit of my own labors now, too.

I’m blogging here about recipes, tips and tricks for cleaning (who doesn’t hate cleaning house?), decorating and sewing advice, and all the stuff I’ve learned about being a housewife, either from my housewife family members or along the way as I figure things out for myself.

In my real-world day-to-day, I am a journalist — pretty much the opposite of a housewifely type. I make my living in a high-tech world of billionaire mover-shakers, but in the evenings and on the weekends, I’m baking, crocheting, and sitting around in an apron and a smile.

  1. Dear Jolie, please remove the nose ring, it is so.passe. You are to good looking of a
women. I saw you on Leo Laporte’s podcast and thought wow what a beautiful and intelligent women, your beauty and mind make all the statement you need to make.
Please let that ring fad go. You don’t need it to draw attention to yourself your very attractive as you are. My first time on your website. I like it.
    Sincerely Kent

  2. I totally agree Kent. Although she might feel that she is not doing it to “draw attention” to herself, I’m sure there is more to that. She may claim that she just “likes” it, which is 100% fine, but there seems to be something missing if that is her reason.
Nose and body jewelry is alright but some of us just do not need it, no matter if we “like” it. – A nose ring adds, distracts or does something to a face with a certain beauty that doesn’t need that addition or distraction.
I apologize Jolie, but you were born with that certain beauty which a nose ring is a unnecessary distraction… even if you “like” it. If you were to ask people for their opinion, most would probably not give you their true honest opinion as to not offend you (unless you asked them for their true 100% sincere thoughts on it.. in a sincere manner). – Just my thoughts.
    Regards,
    Rob R.
ps: I’ve been watching and.. you’re a smart, bright and well spoken one. :-) I like you!

  3. We were at the TWIT studio and enjoyed seeing you (jewelry and all) hold your own with all of that high tech testosterone! You’re a great foil for John C. Dvorak. Hope you enjoyed your bike ride around Petaluma. We found it to be a charming town. Good luck with your book!

  4. Jolie,
Just introduced to your work on TWiT today (watched pre-recorded show on my Roku) and am impressed and excited to learn more about your work. Btw, I hope to try the syrup substitute this coming weekend. I also really like the wallpaper on this site of yours.

For those that may not understand nose rings, colored hair and the like (and I can’t say this applies to everyone, of course), and as one that bleaches/colors his own hair (white) twice a year himself, most do it simply for themselves. The opinions of others rarely come into it (or if they do, it is way down on the list). Plain and simple. It is no different than picking the right shirt or blouse that day. Or a pair of glasses, etc. It is a little thing that makes us feel more like ourselves. I came to discover this more as a fella that married young, then divorced at 28 or so. only then did I really come to discover who I am and what makes ME happy. This is one such thing. In fact, rather than doing it because of the opinion of others, I *didn’t* do it before my divorce *because* of someone else’s opinion. Anywizzle, that is how it is for me and those I’ve talked with.

  5. (not meant in a vulgar way) but just thinking about the apron and a smile… need more cold water.

anyway, I was also a recent viewer of your appearance on TWIT with the old guys – and found it very enjoyable. you certainly make a pleasant addition to the dusty duo. also, I’ve just got to ask – have you had voice lessons? your soft, near quiet voice is amazing – and must be quite a contrast to the inner person that produces such profound results.
I’m looking forward to reading/listening/seeing much more of your work. Thanks!

    • The time question is a good one.

Basically, all the housewife stuff is what I do in my downtime — weekends and evenings, mostly. I stay very, very busy, and I try not to do things with my time that aren’t somehow going to be profitable.

  6. There are so many sides to Jolie O’Dell that I’m never quite sure if I’m being mind f*cked. I read, I look back at her picture and squint, read some more, squint some more, and accept, cause it works.

I cannot explain why I like this site as much as I do, but I do. I think I like someone that I admire and respect telling me how to make cornbread, and reminding me to pick up some bourbon for the Kentucky Derby tomorrow. There’s something comforting about it, and there’s (forgive me) an Americanism about it that I appreciate. I like the reminder that I need a life.

  7. Keep the nose ring and anything else that ‘you’ want to do and continue to be yourself. Having said that, we’re all entitled to our opinions like Kent!
